The first look at Mike Flanagan’s The Exorcist: Martyrs, starring Scarlett Johansson, has been revealed in a new short teaser. In the film, Johansson plays Detective Julie Miller, who has devoted her life to capturing bad guys, punishing wrongdoers, and trying to keep her part of the world a little bit safer.
Below, you can see the first-look images and the teaser, while the full trailer will be released this Friday.

What is The Exorcist: Martyrs about?
In the film, Julie Miller (Scarlett Johansson), an NYPD homicide detective and single mom to 12-year-old Max (Jacobi Jupe). Her mother Mary (Diane Lane) covers childcare when cases keep Julie away. Early in the film, Miller catches “Father Sunday” (John Leguizamo), a serial killer who stages murders to mimic the martyrdoms of Catholic saints, meant to shake believers’ faith.

She witnesses his execution, and it doesn’t go as planned. The killings keep happening afterward, and the evil eventually closes in on her mother and son.
The teaser opens with Johansson as NYPD detective Julie Miller, holding a flashlight in a dark hallway. Her face is lit from below, and she looks scared. The scene then cuts to a dark, yellow-green basement, where a person walks past a large barrel- or cage-like object.
Next, the teaser shows a church with a few people sitting in the pews, a priest at the altar, a large crucifix, and stained-glass windows.

A boy wearing glasses and a striped shirt is then shown lying on a tiled floor and looking up in fear. This matches reports that Miller’s 12-year-old son, Max, becomes the target of a demonic force.
The teaser also shows a body hanging upside down in a hallway, followed by a quick close-up of a distorted face under a bright light.

In a recent interview with Esquire, Flanagan opened up about Scarlett Johansson’s character in The Exorcist: Martyrs.
Flanagan said, “She’s a homicide detective with the NYPD and a single mother of a young boy named Max, who’s just turned 12 years old.” He added, “Because being a homicide detective is one of those jobs that pulls you completely out of your life when you’re on call, you might not come home for days while you’re chasing a case. A lot of the slack is picked up by her own mother, Mary.”
