‘The Marvels‘ and ‘Ant-Man‘ share a budget of $130 million, making them the lowest-budget Marvel Studios films ever. ‘The Marvels’ has a runtime of 1 hour and 47 minutes (107 minutes) and is the most cost-effective movie of 2023.
Directed by Nia DaCosta, the film also holds the record of being the most expensive movie ever directed by a black woman, surpassing Ava DuVernay’s ‘A Wrinkle In Time’. The film stars Brie Larson as Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel, Teyonah Parris as Monica Rambeau, and Iman Vellani as Kamala Khan/Ms. Marvel, Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, Park Seo-joon, Zawe Ashton, Saagar Shaikh, Zenobia Shroff, and Mohan Kapur. The film also brings back Goose, the Flerken.
Nia DaCosta’s Journey: From Indie Filmmaker to Directing Marvel’s ‘The Marvels’
When Nia DaCosta signed on for ‘The Marvels,’ she had only directed one indie film for less than $1 million. Now, she was taking on the sequel to the billion-dollar hit ‘Captain Marvel,’ and her movie had to align with Marvel’s larger brand. Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige was impressed by her indie and nerd credentials.
In an interview with Vanity Fair, Feige said, “We were just very impressed with her indie cred—and her nerd cred.”
In The Marvels, Carol Danvers aka Captain Marvel has reclaimed her identity from the tyrannical Kree and taken revenge on the Supreme Intelligence. But unintended consequences see Carol shouldering the burden of a destabilized universe. When her duties send her to an anomalous wormhole linked to a Kree revolutionary, her powers become entangled with that of Jersey City super-fan Kamala Khan, aka Ms. Marvel, and Carol’s estranged niece, now S.A.B.E.R. astronaut Captain Monica Rambeau. Together, this unlikely trio must team up and learn to work in concert to save the universe as “The Marvels.”
Produced by Marvel Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures. ‘The Marvels’ hits theaters on November 10, 2023.
