Russo Brothers new deal Marvel Studios X-Men reboot

Marvel Studios plans to involve The Russo Brothers in future MCU projects. The Avengers directors aren’t done with the MCU after Avengers: Secret Wars.

According to insider Daniel Richtman in a post on his Patreon, The Russo Brothers have reportedly signed a new deal with Marvel Studios to oversee additional projects for the next saga, including an X-Men reboot movie.

The Russo Brothers will direct the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars. Variety reports that Anthony and Joe Russo will earn $80 million for the projects and will produce both films through their AGBO banner.

Recently, Marvel President Kevin Feige appeared virtually during the Disney APAC Content Showcase and spoke about the future of the X-Men, calling their return to Marvel Studios “a dream come true.”

Feige said, “I think you will see that continue in our next few movies with some X-Men players that you might recognize.” He added, “Right after that, the whole story of Secret Wars really leads us into a new age of mutants and of the X-Men. Again, [it’s] one of those dreams come true. We finally have the X-Men back.”

An insider report confirms that Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine will not be involved in the upcoming X-Men film. The reason for his absence is that Jackman will continue playing the character, likely even after Avengers: Secret Wars.

Filming is scheduled to begin in Q4 2025. Rafe Judkins (The Wheel of Time, Agents of Shield, Uncharted) and Michael Lesslie (The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes, Assassin’s Creed) are reportedly the finalists to write the script for X-Men. Marvel is also considering Ryan Coogler (Black Panther, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever) to direct.

Back in 2023, during an interview with Entertainment Tonight, Feige was asked about what fans could expect from the X-Men in the MCU.

Feige replied, “It’s super exciting. But the X-Men are as solid, rich, and great a concept and characters as exist. There’s the return of the animated series [X-Men ’97’] next year, which we’re very excited about. I saw some new final episodes today, which really brought you back to the core of who the X-Men are and the soap opera that those characters represent. And then, in live action, people will see… perhaps, soon.”

Avengers: Doomsday is set to be released on May 1, 2026, and Avengers: Secret Wars will be released on May 7, 2027.
