Doug Liman and Tom Cruise are teaming up for a supernatural thriller titled Deeper, marking their latest collaboration after successful films like Edge of Tomorrow and American Made.
It will be the first time both Liman and Cruise are making a supernatural or horror movie. Liman said the film will be “scary,” which is different from their usual action-packed films.
During a private screening of excerpts from the documentary Gaucho Gaucho at his Manhattan apartment, Liman confirmed to Showbiz411’s Roger Friedman that his new film with Cruise will be a “scary” movie. “I have never done one,” said Liman, “and neither has Tom.”
What is the Plot of Deeper?
Deeper follows an astronaut (played by Cruise) on a deep-sea dive to explore a newly discovered trench, where he soon encounters a sinister and dangerous force.
Deeper is the same project—written by Max Landis—that was first announced in 2016. Several high-profile actors, including Idris Elba, Bradley Cooper, and Gal Gadot, were attached to the film but later exited. Directors Kornél Mundruczó (2016) and Baltasar Kormákur (2019) were previously linked to direct Deeper but did not follow through. Additionally, MGM initially acquired Landis’ script for a seven-figure sum but eventually dropped the project—abandoning it after reports surfaced of emotional and sexual abuse allegations against Landis by several women.
The upcoming project marks Cruise and Liman’s third film together, following Edge of Tomorrow and American Made. Liman also developed the script for Edge of Tomorrow 2, but he is waiting for Cruise’s Mission Impossible films to conclude. World of Reel recently confirmed that Cruise and Liman will collaborate on a space-set NASA movie, which is still in active development.
