Tom Hanks reveals Toy Story 5 features one of the most heartbreaking scenes in the franchise.
In a recent interview with THR, Hanks said Toy Story still surprises him emotionally, even after all these years. He said the Toy Story films often express emotions and thoughts that many people already experience in real life.
Hanks praised the film for addressing modern issues involving technology and communication. “These movies, they end up speaking [to] and puts in words [and] stuff that everybody is thinking anyway.”

The emotional scene centers on a young girl whose feelings are hurt by messages and texts from other people. According to Hanks, the girl does not understand why she is being treated that way or what she did wrong.
Hanks said, “There’s one of the most heartbreaking scenes I’ve ever seen in any of the Toy Story movies — when that little girl is getting her feelings hurt by what other people are texting about her, and she doesn’t understand why. She doesn’t know what she did wrong, but it hurts, and that is a very prescient thing to have in a motion picture today about little kids and toys, don’t you think?”
The actor said he and Tim Allen have been part of the franchise long enough to know what to expect, yet the films still surprise them. Hanks also teased a scene featuring 500 Buzz Lightyears emerging from the water.
“They always take me to some other emotional place that I’m both happy to [go] and mad that they’re going to make me do this,” Hanks said. “But Tim and I have done this enough. When I saw the first scene where 500 Buzz Lightyears come up out of the water, I just said, ‘Oh, Tim’s gonna have a field day with this.’ Thank goodness he has to voice 500 of these things, and I don’t.”
Andrew Stanton directs Toy Story 5 from a script he co-wrote with Kenna Harris. The film is the latest installment in the Toy Story saga, continuing the story after Toy Story 4.
