Why Did 'The Flash' Tank At The Box Office?

The box office numbers for ‘The Flash‘ are declining steadily. The film, released on June 16, 2023, has grossed only $176.7 million worldwide, with a domestic gross of $76.88 million. It is facing challenges in reaching the $250 million mark at the global box office.

Did the early free screenings and leaked footage negatively impact the box office performance of ‘The Flash’?

The early free screenings of ‘The Flash’ happened more than they should have, letting many people watch it for free instead of paying. Some of these fans recorded and leaked parts of the movie on TikTok, YouTube, and other social media platforms before it was officially released.

The leaked footage showed bad CGI, which turned people off from watching it. Along with mixed reviews and word-of-mouth, these factors contributed to the movie’s poor performance. The general audience might not know much about Ezra Miller or that ‘The Flash’ is a reboot, so that’s probably not the main issue here.

‘The Flash’ had a disappointing opening weekend, earning only $130 million worldwide. This is even lower than Black Adam’s $143 million opening, which also fell short of reaching $400 million. ‘The Flash’ has received a B grade CinemaScore from audiences, tying it with ‘Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice’ for the lowest grade among the DC Extended Universe (DCEU) films, while ‘Wonder Woman’ holds an A, ‘Man of Steel’ an A-, and ‘Black Adam’ a B+ CinemaScore.

Directed by Andy Muschietti and written by Christina Hodson, the plot is based on the comic book storyline “Flashpoint,” and follows: Worlds collide when the Flash uses his superpowers to travel back in time to change the events of the past. However, when his attempt to save his family inadvertently alters the future, he becomes trapped in a reality in which General Zod has returned, threatening annihilation. With no other superheroes to turn to, the Flash looks to coax a very different Batman out of retirement and rescue an imprisoned Kryptonian—albeit not the one he’s looking for. Read our review.

The film stars Ezra Miller as Barry Allen/The Flash, alongside Sasha Calle, Michael Shannon, Ron Livingston, Maribel Verdú, Kiersey Clemons, Antje Traue, Ben Affleck, and Michael Keaton.

Produced by DC Studios, Double Dream, and the Disco Factory, and set for distribution by Warner Bros. Pictures. The film’s sequel is already in development.
