The sequel to Wonka is in development and currently in the pre-production stage. According to Production List, Wonka 2 is scheduled to begin production on January 5, 2026, in Los Angeles.
At the end of Wonka, Willy (Timothée Chalamet) is finally free to reopen his chocolate shop and share his gifts with the world. Following that, Wonka 2 is described as “a musical origin story set in mid-19th century England.”

Wonka 2 will be a reimagining of Roald Dahl’s classic children’s book Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. It is described as a musical origin story set in mid-19th century England during the Industrial Revolution, where Willy is portrayed as a man who sees color within the gray of a dreary England.
Warner Bros. has already updated a new edition of their release calendar, listing an “UNTITLED WB FAMILY SEQUEL” dated for December 17, 2027. This could be Wonka 2.
Last year, while speaking to HeyUGuys, Wonka director Paul King confirmed that the sequel is indeed in development and that the script is currently being written.
King said, “We’ve got about half of a draft. We’ve got a story that we like, and we know where we want to take him.”
Speaking to Total Film, King said that Dahl didn’t just write two books in the series. He may also have access to, and be able to draw from, several unpublished stories that were partially completed by Dahl. “There are drafts that didn’t really go anywhere, and there’s a short story,” King said. “There’s an awful lot more Wonka story that we have and would like to tell.”
The first film currently holds a 90% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes and a 6.9/10 rating on IMDb. Wonka stars Chalamet, Hugh Grant, Calah Lane, Olivia Colman, Keegan-Michael Key, and Paterson Joseph. The film was directed and written by Paul King and was released on December 15, 2023, grossing over $634 million worldwide against a $125 million budget, making it the eighth-highest-grossing film of 2023.
