Zach Cregger‘s Resident Evil adaptation has been a major success at both the box office and in the gaming market. The film has now crossed $200 million at the worldwide box office and continues to play in theaters.
Following the positive response to the movie, there has been a surprising boost in sales of Resident Evil 2 Remake and Resident Evil 4 Remake on PlayStation 5. Cregger’s Resident Evil has become the most profitable movie in the franchise and has renewed interest in the games that inspired it.

According to data from Alinea Analytics, Resident Evil 2 Remake and Resident Evil 4 (2023) saw a major boost in sales after Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil hit theaters. The games’ PS5 sales increased by 64% and 54%, respectively, during the following week.
Alinea Analytics’ Rhys Elliot reported that including Steam sales pushed the overall increases even higher, with additional boosts of 11% for Resident Evil 2 Remake and 14% for Resident Evil 4 (2023).
On PlayStation, the two games saw their revenue increase by 80% and 84%, respectively. However, Capcom had already reduced the prices of both games about 10 days before Cregger’s movie hit theaters.
According to Elliot, the discounts were responsible for much of the initial increase, but Austin Abrams’ performance as Bryan also helped drive interest in the games during the following week. This also led to an increase in the number of players.
Daily player numbers for several major Resident Evil games increased after September 18. Resident Evil 2 Remake recorded the biggest boost, with daily active users rising 48%, from roughly 78,000 to 116,000.
The surge is understandable, as Cregger’s film takes place alongside the events of Resident Evil 2 Remake.
The sales and player numbers continued to rise across the Resident Evil franchise. Resident Evil 4 (2023) saw a 24% increase in players, while Resident Evil 3 Remake jumped 25%. Meanwhile, Resident Evil Requiem recorded a 20% increase in active players.
Resident Evil Requiem has also surpassed $500 million in total lifetime revenue, with 91% of its sales coming from PlayStation and Steam. The game helped drive PlayStation and PC sales in Japan during the first half of 2026, with the market growing 13% to reach 21 million copies sold.
Recently, Dean Sherriff, the visual concept designer for Cregger’s Resident Evil, shared concept art for the movie on his official website. Below, you can see the artwork.
In a recent interview, Cregger said the first-person shooter scenes in Resident Evil were created using camera rigs mounted on guns and, sometimes, on Austin Abrams’ head.
“We mount it to a machine gun & shotgun… you have to mount it rigidly to the gun to get that first-person ratio… If the barrel’s too high in the frame or slightly not aiming dead center, it feels dead wrong.”
Here’s the plot details for Cregger’s Resident Evil:
Bryan (Austin Abrams), a laid-back organ courier, is sent on a late-night delivery to Raccoon City General Hospital. En route through a snowy mountain road, he accidentally hits a strange woman with his car. She survives — but something is very wrong. As he tries to help, Bryan stumbles into a full-blown outbreak involving horrifying tentacle-based mutations and bio-engineered monstrosities.
The cast includes Abrams as Bryan, a medical courier, alongside Paul Walter Hauser, Zach Cherry, Kali Reis, and Johnno Wilson.
Directed by Cregger, who co-wrote the screenplay with Shay Hatten, the film serves as the second reboot of the Resident Evil film series. It is the eighth installment overall in the franchise, which is based on the video game series by Capcom.
The film is produced by Columbia Pictures and PlayStation Productions, in association with Constantin Film and Vertigo Entertainment.
Resident Evil is now playing in theaters.
