Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil is nearing $400 million at the worldwide box office and is coming to home release starting November 3, 2026. Audiences have praised the film as one of the best video game adaptations and the highest-grossing film in the franchise.
According to Cregger, he was frustrated that discussion surrounding Resident Evil focused more on its relationship to the games than on the movie itself. Fans debated whether the film met their expectations, used familiar characters, or stayed faithful to the games’ lore. Cregger always wanted to capture what it feels like to play Resident Evil rather than just copy the games’ story and characters.

On The Town podcast with host Matt Belloni, Cregger discussed whether he would make another film based on an existing intellectual property. Cregger said, “Never say never.” He added, “All the conversation [around Resident Evil] just felt like it was about not the movie.”
Cregger continued, “I was frustrated at the conversation around Resident Evil and how much of the conversation really didn’t have anything to do with the movie. It had everything to do with whether the movie was living up to the different standards that different fans of the games had, whether it was using the characters or not, or what did I get wrong in the lore, or why is it? It was just a lot about why isn’t this like the source material or why is it good that it’s not like the… All the conversation just felt like it was about not the movie.”
Although Cregger has faced a lot of backlash from fans, he says he is proud of Resident Evil and believes it is exactly the film he set out to make. Cregger said he loves the movie but admits he underestimated how intense the debate over its relationship to the games would become. The Resident Evil franchise has faced criticism for years over adaptations that diverged from the games.
Recently, Hideo Kojima praised Cregger’s film, saying it reminded him of how he felt playing the first Resident Evil game.
Kojima said, “This isn’t a film adaptation of Resident Evil. It’s a film about the experience of playing Resident Evil, controller in hand. It reminded me of how I felt when I first played the original Resident Evil on PlayStation back in 1996. I was just like Bryan in this movie. I kept getting game over after game over, shouting ‘F***!’ over and over again.”
Here’s the synopsis: From the mind of visionary filmmaker Zach Cregger (Weapons, Barbarian) comes a thrilling and terrifying reinvention of the Resident Evil franchise.
