Game of Thrones Universe Set to Expand with Warner Bros. Film in Development

A Game of Thrones movie is in the early stages of development at Warner Bros. Pictures, as confirmed by The Hollywood Reporter.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the film currently has no filmmaker, cast, or writer attached. It would further expand George R.R. Martin‘s A Song of Ice and Fire universe beyond television.

Insiders report that Warner Bros. is eager to bring Westeros to the big screen, offering Game of Thrones fans large-scale battles and richer lore. Additionally, the studio is interested in exploring a new direction for the franchise and this move could signify a change in Warner Bros.’ strategy concerning the Game of Thrones franchise.

David Benioff and Dan Weiss—the showrunners of the original Game of Thrones series—had initially proposed concluding the series with three feature films instead of the final season in 2019. Martin was also supportive of the idea of a movie, indicating in a 2014 interview with The Hollywood Reporter that concepts for a film were being discussed. For many years, HBO was resistant to the idea of a Game of Thrones film, preferring to maintain the series’ prestige as an HBO-exclusive property.

Following the end of Game of Thrones, there have been numerous changes in the company’s executive ranks, with HBO now led by Casey Bloys and the film studio by Mike De Luca and Pam Abdy. The film-versus-TV landscape has shifted, showing an increased willingness to move cinematic properties to the small screen and vice versa.

Currently, HBO has plans for a prequel series titled A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, set to release in 2025. “Set 100 years before Game of Thrones and 100 years after House of the Dragon, the series will feature encounters with several members of the Targaryen dynasty.”

Game of Thrones is based on Martin’s book series A Song of Ice and Fire. The HBO show, created by Benioff and Weiss, premiered on April 17, 2011, and concluded on May 19, 2019. The show quickly gained a massive following and became one of HBO’s most successful productions, with its final season attracting over 19 million viewers across all platforms on premiere night. The series featured an ensemble cast, including Emilia Clarke as Daenerys Targaryen, Kit Harington as Jon Snow, Peter Dinklage as Tyrion Lannister, Lena Headey as Cersei Lannister, and Maisie Williams as Arya Stark. Game of Thrones garnered critical acclaim and received 59 Primetime Emmy Awards, making it one of the most awarded series in Emmy history.

HBO debuted House of the Dragon in 2022, and it has successfully completed its second season. Additionally, HBO is actively developing new concepts for future series.
