A new Godzilla movie has officially been announced by Toho. Surprisingly, Takashi Yamazaki—writer, director, and VFX supervisor of Godzilla Minus One—will return to direct the new Japanese installment.
On X, @Godzilla_Toho shared new footage titled “EMERGENCY ANNOUNCEMENT.” No additional information was provided, apart from Yamazaki’s return as director.
The upcoming wide re-release of Godzilla Minus One in North America will include a remastered black-and-white version. Both the re-release and the announcement celebrate Global Godzilla Day on November 3, marking the anniversary of the original Godzilla movie’s release in Japan in 1954.
In an interview with IGN, Yamazaki said, “Our situation was unique, given how I was situated in the larger scheme of the overall production.” Yamazaki added, “And the fact that I had a clear goal, more perhaps than other directors, because of my VFX background. There are good inefficiencies and bad inefficiencies. We focused on the approval process in different ways to streamline certain aspects of the VFX pipeline.”
Released in 2023, Godzilla Minus One was produced on a budget of $10–12 million and grossed $107 million worldwide, becoming the fifth highest-grossing Japanese film of the year. It received 12 nominations at the 47th Japan Academy Film Prize and earned a nomination for Best Visual Effects at the 96th Academy Awards, marking the first Godzilla film to receive an Oscar nomination.
Synopsis: “Set in post-war Japan, Godzilla Minus One will once again show us a Godzilla that is a terrifying and overwhelming force. Japan, which had already been devastated by the war, faces a new threat with Godzilla, bringing the country from nothing (zero) into the ‘minus.’”
Godzilla Minus One is now available on Netflix.
