Marvel’s Captain America: Brave New World underwent several changes, including reshoots and planned scenes that were ultimately cut. The scenes featuring Tim Blake Nelson‘s character, The Leader, were reshot, and the Serpent Society was scrapped from the film entirely.
Now, newly revealed concept art by artist Michael Blackbear Uwandi gives us a glimpse of what could have been—Captain America facing off against the Serpent Society.

On Instagram, Uwandi shared the artwork and wrote:
“In early development of Captain America: Brave New World, we envisioned what it would look like to see Cap fighting the Serpent Society. So many cool ideas for them that didn’t make it into the final film.“
Recently, scooper MyTimeToShineH revealed that Alden Ehrenreich’s Zeke Stane, who appeared in Marvel Television’s Ironheart series, was originally intended to be the creator of the Serpent Society in Captain America: Brave New World. This was back when the show was scheduled to release before the movie, and the group was envisioned as a team of cyborgs. See the image below.

Before the reshoots, Cobra existed in the film and was played by Seth Rollins, but Marvel scrapped his role while revisiting the Serpent Society storyline. Director Julius Onah revealed that the film’s reshoots shifted Captain America: Brave New World from a more “heightened” tone to something “more grounded,” which ultimately led to the removal of the Serpent Society.
Onah explained: “I think it gets a little deceptive in ‘a whole new character was added,'” he said, referring to Giancarlo Esposito‘S character, Sidewinder. “Because the Serpent Society was always a part of the story. So the story function that the Serpent Society serves in the film has never changed… We were probably deviating a bit too much from the grounded tone we wanted the movie to have with how we had originally created the Serpent Society.”
Directed by Onah from a screenplay by Malcolm Spellman, Dalan Musson, and Matthew Orton. The film stars Anthony Mackie as Sam Wilson/Captain America, Danny Danny Ramirez as Joaquín Torres/Falcon, Blake Nelson as Samuel Sterns/Leader, Carl Lumbly as Isaiah Bradley, Harrison Ford as President Thaddeus Ross, Liv Tyler as Betty Ross, Haas as Ruth Bat-Seraph/Sabra, Esposito as Sidewinder, Rosa Salazar, and Xosha Roquemore.
In Captain America: Brave New World, after executing a successful mission in Mexico, Sam (Mackie) and his partner Joaquin/Falcon (Ramirez) are invited to the White House to meet with President Ross (Ford). He asks Sam, the new Captain America, to reconstitute the Avengers Initiative. However, they almost immediately square off on opposite sides when an assassination attempt occurs.
Captain America: Brave New World is now streaming on Disney+.
