Stranger Things is coming to an end, streaming on December 31, 2025, on Netflix, and executive producer and director Shawn Levy has revealed that the finale is a “masterpiece.”
According to Levy, the Stranger Things finale, which has a runtime of over two hours, delivers outcomes that are “deeply satisfying,” with many that are “completely surprising.”

Speaking to People, Levy said, “I just want to assure all of the people around the world who have walked the long road with us for nearly a decade that this finale is what you’ve been waiting for.” He added, “It is both informationally satisfying and, most importantly, profoundly emotionally satisfying.”
Volume 2 ends with Episode 7. Max (Sadie Sink) wakes up and explains Vecna’s plan to merge their world with a dark parallel dimension called the Abyss. The group plans to enter the Abyss, save Vecna’s kidnapped children, and destroy it with a bomb.
In the final scene, Vecna—still pretending to be human as Henry Creel—makes his brainwashed victims hold hands in a strange ritual as they are taken into the Abyss.
Recently, Jamie Campbell Bower said fans aren’t ready for what’s coming in the finale.
“The end of 7 is an incredible setup for what is to come. And if you think you know what is coming at the beginning of 8, you’re probably wrong. It really does blow the fuck up. Whatever you think you know will be exceeded.”
The Stranger Things 5 finale will be the franchise’s first theatrical release, playing in more than 500 theaters across the U.S. and Canada starting on New Year’s Eve at 5 p.m. PT alongside its Netflix debut, with 1.1 million RSVPs and over 3,500 sold-out showtimes across 620 theaters.
Here’s the full synopsis for Stranger Things 5:
“The fall of 1987. Hawkins is scarred by the opening of the Rifts, and our heroes are united by a single goal: find and kill Vecna. But he has vanished — his whereabouts and plans unknown.
