The new images from Ti West’s Ebenezer, starring Johnny Depp as Ebenezer Scrooge, Ian McKellen as Jacob Marley, Tramell Tillman as the Ghost of Christmas Present, and Rupert Grint as Bob Cratchit, have been released exclusively by Entertainment Weekly.
According to Ti West, known for horror films such as X and Pearl, he is taking a darker approach to the classic Christmas story A Christmas Carol with his Ebenezer film. West said that he has been obsessed with Dickens’ story since childhood. Although he first connected with A Christmas Carol as a ghost story rather than simply a Christmas tale.
“I used to read it every year, and when I was a kid, I liked it more as a ghost story than as a Christmas story because, when I was young, I saw the George C. Scott TV movie, and Marley really freaked me out,” he told EW. “It was one of the earlier horror-adjacent things I had seen.”
West wants the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Yet to Come to feel genuinely spooky and frightening. He says he has always felt that previous adaptations haven’t fully explored the horror potential of the three ghosts.
Johnny Depp’s Lifelong Love of ‘A Christmas Carol’ Led Him to ‘Ebenezer’
Depp will lead West’s Ebenezer as Ebenezer Scrooge. Depp is also a longtime fan of A Christmas Carol and particularly loved the 1951 adaptation starring Alastair Sim.
Ti West says, “He’s the movie, really,” which highlights how important Depp is to the adaptation.
“The Dickensian dialogue has a certain musicality to it, and I just think Johnny has that cadence and that musicality to the way that he performs. And I thought, ‘I don’t know if he’d ever want to do it.’ And so we sent it over, and he also coincidentally happened to be obsessed with it his whole life.”
Ebenezer is directed by Ti West from a screenplay by Nathaniel Halpern, based on Charles Dickens’ 1843 novella A Christmas Carol. Set in early Victorian London, the film follows miserly businessman Ebenezer Scrooge as he is forced to confront visions of the past, present, and future during a supernatural journey toward a chance at redemption.

Paramount Pictures has scheduled Ebenezer for a theatrical release on November 13, 2026, in both the United States and United Kingdom.
