The Russo Brothers confirm that Robert Downey Jr.‘s Doctor Doom is a very powerful character in Avengers: Doomsday. According to Joe Russo, Doom is a genius who studies his enemies and understands their strengths and weaknesses. His magic is also ancient.
In a recent interview with Fandango, Joe Russo said of Doctor Doom, “He studies his foes. He understands them and he’s also well-planned. He’s not somebody who just does something off the cuff.” This makes Doom very difficult to defeat.
Joe also compared Doom to Thanos, saying that Thanos mostly relied on brute force, while Doom is more “Machiavellian and manipulative” than Thanos.
Joe said, “Doom’s magic is ancient. He is a very powerful character, as you can see in the trailer, and he’s a genius. He studies his foes. He understands them, and he’s also well-planned. He’s not somebody who just does something off the cuff. So, everything is meticulous with him, and he knows that if he’s going to step onto a battlefield against somebody, he has to have the tactical advantage or a power advantage against that person. So, he’s very difficult to beat.”
He added, “You know, Thanos was just like a brute force of nature. He would, you know, push his way through every problem. Doom is much more Machiavellian and manipulative than Thanos in that regard. And that’s, you know, obviously one of the main new characters that we’ll see, but a huge new team of Avengers that are teaming up, including a lot of the characters that you guys have worked with in the past, as well as a lot of people you guys haven’t worked with yet.”
Avengers: Doomsday Could Be the Scariest Avengers Movie Yet
Joe Russo says Avengers: Doomsday is intense and different from previous Marvel movies. The film has a very different tone compared with other Avengers movies, according to the directors.
Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom could also make the movie feel frightening.
Joe said, “It’s intense. It’s different from any of the other movies Marvel’s made… The tone is very different — you have Robert Downey Jr. playing one of the all-time great villains, and he’s going to bring a level of gravitas and energy to that that can be frightening.”
Anthony Russo Calls the Original X-Men Reunion a “Marvel Miracle”
The directors are excited to bring the Avengers and the original X-Men together in Avengers: Doomsday. According to Anthony Russo, bringing back the original X-Men actors in Avengers: Doomsday feels like a dream come true. He describes the reunion as part of a “Marvel miracle.”
Anthony said, “To be able to work with those actors is like a dream come true for us. It’s part of the sort of Marvel miracle… [the Avengers and the X-Men] had a connection in the comics, and then, as they segued into the cinema, it got divided between Hollywood studios.”
He added, “We never imagined the day that they could find their way back to one another. So, the fact that we can sort of be the facilitators of that and activate that through this movie, we have to pinch ourselves.”
