Warning: This article contains major spoilers for the Ghost Rider movie.
Marvel’s Ghost Rider movie is the second film scheduled for release after Avengers: Secret Wars, with X-Men arriving first in May 2028. The film is set in Phase 7 of the MCU and is part of the Mutant Saga. Ryan Gosling will transform into the Spirit of Vengeance.
According to industry insider Daniel Richtman, in a Patreon post, Sacha Baron Cohen will reprise his role as Mephisto in the Ghost Rider movie, but not as the main villain. Baron Cohen’s Mephisto last appeared in the Ironheart series finale, where Riri Williams made a deal with Mephisto.

Of course, Mephisto is expected to play a major role in Ghost Rider, especially given the comics’ origin story. Johnny Blaze makes a deal with Mephisto to save his adoptive father, Crash Simpson, from terminal cancer. However, Crash dies shortly afterward in a motorcycle stunt, and Mephisto collects his debt by bonding Johnny’s soul with Zarathos, transforming him into Ghost Rider.
It is rumored that Ryan Gosling’s Johnny Blaze will first appear in Avengers: Secret Wars in a minor role before making his full debut in the Ghost Rider movie.
Ghost Rider Could Lead Directly Into Marvel’s Midnight Sons

There are plans for Marvel Studios to develop Midnight Sons right after Ghost Rider. With Ghost Rider in the MCU, Marvel could easily bring the Midnight Sons together as its next supernatural project. The group of heroes could include Ghost Rider, Blade, Elsa Bloodstone, Man-Thing, Werewolf by Night, and Moon Knight.
Marvel has spent years building toward a Midnight Sons movie, introducing supernatural characters across the Multiverse Saga. The team could become the MCU’s supernatural counterpart to Thunderbolts*, uniting heroes in a smaller-scale ensemble adventure.
Earlier reports said Marvel was moving quickly on the project and looking for a new writer and director after Michael Green left.
The working title for the Ghost Rider movie is Drive-Thru, with Throttle Productions LLC linked to the project. Filming will begin in July 2027 in New York. Deadpool & Wolverine director Shawn Levy has been tapped to direct the film, with a screenplay by Jonathan Tropper (Star Wars: Starfighter), while Linus Sandgren (Dune: Part Three) will serve as cinematographer.
What Is the Plot of the New Ghost Rider Movie?
According to a document from Production List, the synopsis for the Ghost Rider movie reads: “Johnny Blaze (Ryan Gosling) has the perfect life: a wife and two kids, a job at an auto repair shop, and a small-town community that supports him. But Johnny isn’t doing well. He has nightmares about monsters when he sleeps and sees bloody visions when he’s awake. His life is beginning to feel like a prison, and there’s a spirit inside him that’s begging to break free.”
Produced by Kevin Feige, Louis D’Esposito, Stephen Broussard, Richie Palmer, and Jessie Henderson.
Ghost Rider is scheduled to hit theaters and IMAX in the United States on July 28, 2028.
