Cillian Murphy Expresses Enthusiasm for Working with Christopher Nolan, Admits Being “Desperate” to Play a Lead in One of His Films
Cillian Murphy expressed his enthusiasm for working with filmmaker Christopher Nolan. Murphy said that he had always wanted to be in one of Nolan’s films and was even “desperate” to play the lead in one.
Murphy went on to explain that he doesn’t care about the size of the role he’s given and would be happy to appear in any capacity in a Nolan film, but secretly he had a strong desire to play a lead role in one of Nolan’s films.
In an interview with the Associated Press (Via Variety), Murphy discussed his role as J. Robert Oppenheimer in Nolan’s upcoming film “Oppenheimer,” where he stars as the theoretical physicist and “father of the atomic bomb.”
Murphy said he “was desperate” to lead a Nolan film. “I have always said publicly and privately, to Chris, that if I’m available and you want me to be in a movie, I’m there. I don’t really care about the size of the part.” Murphy added, “But deep down, secretly, I was desperate to play lead for him.”
According to Murphy, he got the lead role in “Oppenheimer” via a cold-call offer from Nolan. He said, “He’s so understated and self-deprecating and, in his very English manner, just said, ‘Listen, I’ve written this script, it’s about Oppenheimer. I’d like you to be my Oppenheimer.’” Murphy added, “It was a great day… We have this long-standing understanding, trust, shorthand, and respect. It felt like the right time to take on a bigger responsibility. And it just so happened that it was a huge one.”
Oppenheimer is written and directed by Christopher Nolan. The film is based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning book American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer by Kai Bird and the late Martin J. Sherwin.
Murphy also told audiences will be “very surprised and wowed” by Christopher Nolan’s work on “Oppenheimer.” “Anything I say will just seem a bit lame as compared to seeing this in an IMAX theater.”
The film also stars Emily Blunt, Robert Downey Jr., Matt Damon, Rami Malek, Florence Pugh, Benny Safdie, Michael Angarano, Josh Hartnett, and Kenneth Branagh. Watch out for the trailer below.

Oppenheimer will hit theaters on July 21, 2023, by Universal Pictures.
