For those who have been waiting for Chris Evans‘ return to the MCU, the wait is over! It has been confirmed that Evans has officially joined the cast of Marvel’s Avengers: Doomsday, alongside Robert Downey Jr., as reported by The Wrap.
According to reports, Evans’ character in Doomsday will be “involved in some capacity, but the extent and exact nature of his role is unknown.” He last appeared as Steve Rogers/Captain America in Avengers: Endgame and recently reprised his character Johnny Storm from Fox’s Fantastic Four movies in Deadpool and Wolverine.
Deadline reported that Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson will be the Captain America in Doomsday. Therefore, Evans will not be portraying Captain America; instead, he will be playing a new character.

In Avengers: Doomsday, Downey Jr. will play the role of Doctor Doom, Evans as an undisclosed character, Tom Holland as Spider-Man, Pedro Pascal as Reed Richards, Joseph Quinn as Johnny Storm, Wyatt Russell as US Agent, Vanessa Kirby as an undisclosed character, Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova, David Harbour as Red Guardian, Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier, Mackie as Sam Wilson/Captain America, Ebon Moss-Bachrach as The Thing, Benedict Cumberbatch as Doctor Strange, Elizabeth Olsen as Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch, and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Wonder Man.
As reported, Avengers: Doomsday will be a multiverse film—because it’s the conclusion of the Multiverse Saga. The plot of Avengers: Doomsday follows Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom, who isn’t truly evil; he believes he is trying to save the multiverse from incursions. In his twisted logic, the only way for the multiverse to survive is to unify all universes in one place—Battleworld—under his rule. He sees this as the sole path to ensuring survival for everyone.
Filming for Avengers: Doomsday is set to begin in March 2025, with the Russo Brothers directing and Stephen McFeely writing the script. Unusually for Marvel, the Russo Brothers will also produce both films through their AGBO banner.
Avengers: Doomsday is set to be released on May 1, 2026, and Avengers: Secret Wars will be released on May 7, 2027.
