There will be two Captain Americas in Avengers: Doomsday, but that doesn’t mean Marvel is taking the title away from the new Cap. Anthony Mackie took over as Captain America in the MCU following Chris Evans’ departure as the original Steve Rogers. Now, Avengers: Doomsday is bringing Evans back to the team. Mackie has confirmed that Evans will return as Steve Rogers, but not to replace him as Captain America.
In a recent interview with Deadline, Mackie confirmed that Chris Evans is returning in Avengers: Doomsday as Steve Rogers, not as Captain America. Mackie explains that Evans is “just coming back and reprising his role,” while he remains Captain America in the MCU.

He says, “I’m still Captain America,” and points to the Marvel comics, where Steve Rogers and Sam Wilson have fought together as Captain America. Steve is returning because the Avengers have a major opponent to battle in Doomsday.
Mackie said, “He’s just coming back and reprising his role, but I’m still Captain America. Like, if you look at the comic books, there are comic books where Steve Rogers and Sam Wilson are together fighting as Captain America.” He added, “They’re both still Captain America. It’s just Steve Rogers comes back because they have a a big opponent to battle in Doomsday.”

The filming for Avengers: Secret Wars is set to begin soon, and Mackie has had to prepare for his return as Captain America. Mackie says he’ll “finish up” filming Avengers: Secret Wars after his Broadway run of Macbeth, which is scheduled to run from March/April through July 2027.
“So once I finish on Broadway, I’ll go to finish up all the Avengers stuff for Secret Wars,” Mackie said.
Why Is Steve Rogers Returning in Avengers: Doomsday?

Steve Rogers caused the events that led to the incursions in Avengers: Doomsday, according to director Anthony Russo. According to Russo, Steve Rogers’ decision to travel back in time at the end of Avengers: Endgame ultimately set the events of Avengers: Doomsday in motion.
He said, “You all just saw Endgame Encore, and there’s certainly a pivotal moment in that film at the end. We play one beat past where Steve Rogers’ story ended with Peggy… in that moment, that’s where Doomsday is born.”
Here’s the plot synopsis for Avengers: Doomsday:
