Edgar Wright, known for directing ‘Last Night in Soho,’ is officially in talks to direct the ‘Barbarella‘ remake, starring Sydney Sweeney (‘Immaculate’ and ‘Anyone but You’). Jane Goldman (‘Kingsman: The Golden Circle’) along with Honey Ross, is writing the script.
The film is currently in the early stages of development, with Sweeney balancing her commitments to other projects. Sweeney has recently been cast as Christy Martin in a biopic directed by David Michod. Additionally, there are talks that she has signed a deal with Marvel Studios.
‘Barbarella,’ released in 1968 and directed by Roger Vadim, was based on the French comic series by Jean-Claude Forest. Starring Jane Fonda as Barbarella, the film follows her adventures as a space traveler in the distant future. It has gained a cult following over the years, becoming a quintessential example of 1960s sci-fi cinema. In 2020, plans for a new film were announced by the Forest estate.
Wright has been eyeing the project since it was announced, initially meeting with Sweeney. He’s now committed to developing it further, aligning with Sony and Sweeney’s vision.
Sweeney’s upcoming projects include ‘Echo Valley,’ a thriller alongside Julianne Moore, currently in post-production, and ‘Eden,’ another thriller alongside Ana de Armas and Vanessa Kirby, also in post-production.
Goldman is represented by WME and Independent Talent Group, Ross by WME and 42mp, Wright by CAA, and Sweeney by Paradigm and Hansen, Jacobson, and Teller.
The ‘Barbarella’ remake is set to begin production soon, although no release date has been scheduled yet.
