Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars updates

We got a few updates on the upcoming Marvel movies Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars. As of now, the hype for the films is bigger than Endgame. All our heroes are reuniting once again in the MCU.

In the December Discord Q&A with Alex Perez (via The Cosmic Circus), new updates for the film were revealed. In Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars, the secondary antagonists will likely be variants. There will be a mix of good, bad, and even worse variants from across the multiverse. The films follow a Multiversal War on a massive scale, in line with the prophecy teased in Loki Season 1. The key players in this war won’t be Kang or his variants, but other Marvel heroes and villains from across the multiverse.

Recently, Chris Evans joined the cast, as he is expected to play multiple characters, including Steve Rogers from the end of Endgame—the version who lived with Peggy.

The return of characters like Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man) and Evans (Captain America) isn’t just fan service. These legacy appearances will serve important roles in the films—much like how Spider-Man: No Way Home and Deadpool & Wolverine utilized previous characters.

Doctor Doom won’t be the usual villain. Instead, he will be an antagonist trying to save the multiverse. There are rumors that Doctor Strange might be blamed for the multiverse problems, especially the incursions. The events of No Way Home and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will be important for the story of Doomsday. The incursion seen in No Way Home connects to the bigger multiverse issues mentioned by Clea in Multiverse of Madness.

The Thunderbolts will have an important role in Doomsday. The Young Avengers aren’t fully formed yet, but characters like Cassie Lang, Ironheart, Ms. Marvel, America Chavez, and Kate Bishop will appear. Newer characters from Phase 4 and 5, like Shang-Chi, Yelena Belova, Kamala Khan (Ms. Marvel), and Riri Williams (Ironheart), will also have a lot of screen time and development. The film will give time to these newer characters while still focusing on the returning heroes.

Franklin Richards will be a major character in Doomsday and Secret Wars.

In Avengers: Doomsday, Downey Jr. will play the role of Doctor Doom, Evans as an Nomad, Tom Holland as Spider-Man, Pedro Pascal as Reed Richards, Joseph Quinn as Johnny Storm, Wyatt Russell as US Agent, Vanessa Kirby as Sue Storm, Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova, David Harbour as Red Guardian, Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier, Anthony Mackie as Sam Wilson/Captain America, Ebon Moss-Bachrach as The Thing, Benedict Cumberbatch as Doctor Strange, Elizabeth Olsen as Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch, and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Wonder Man.

Filming for Avengers: Doomsday is set to begin in March 2025, with the Russo Brothers directing and Stephen McFeely writing the script. Unusually for Marvel, the Russo Brothers will also produce both films through their AGBO banner.

Avengers: Doomsday is set to be released on May 1, 2026, and Avengers: Secret Wars will be released on May 7, 2027.
