Ryan Gosling has been spotted on the set of the new sci-fi movie Project Hail Mary in Southsea, England. The film follows a man who wakes up from a coma with amnesia and soon remembers he was sent 12 light-years away from Earth to save humanity.
Recently, set images of Gosling and Sandra Hüller filming in Cambridge have leaked online—Gosling is seen wearing an ugly yellow sweater, giving him a distinctly middle-aged appearance—while Hüller is wrapped in a sweater.
In the Phil Lord and Chris Miller-directed movie, Gosling transforms into a bookish schoolteacher-turned-astronaut who wakes up from a coma, alone, on a space station with no memory of who he is or what his mission entails. His memory returns in bursts, and he gradually pieces together that he was sent to the Tau Ceti solar system, 12 light-years from Earth, to reverse the effects of a cosmic event that has already plunged our planet into the early stages of an Ice Age.
The film also stars Milana Vayntrub and James Ortiz as the puppeteer of Rocky, an alien Ryland encounters.
Here’s the plot synopsis for Project Hail Mary:
“Project Hail Mary, filmed for IMAX, is an adaptation of Weir’s (author of “The Martian”) novel, set in the near future. Gosling stars as Ryland Grace, a former schoolteacher turned astronaut, who awakens from a coma to find himself alone on a space station, devoid of memories about his identity or mission. As his memory gradually returns, he realizes he was sent to the Tau Ceti solar system, 12 light-years away from Earth, to counteract a space event that has thrust our planet into the early stages of an Ice Age. As the details of his mission unfold, he must rely on his scientific expertise and resourcefulness. However, he might not be as alone as he initially thought…”
The film is produced by Lord, Miller, Gosling, Ken Kao, Amy Pascal, and Andy Weir. The film is a collaboration between Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, Lord Miller Productions, and Pascal Pictures.
Project Hail Mary arrives in hit theaters on March 20, 2026, by Amazon MGM Studios under the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures label.
