Will Smith officially announces ‘I Am Legend 2‘ is happening. He’s received the script and plans to discuss the film with co-star Michael B. Jordan this weekend. Smith shares that screenwriter Akiva Goldsman took inspiration from the DVD’s alternate ending for the sequel.
At a Red Sea International Film Festival session in Saudi Arabia, Smith revealed he’s set to star alongside Jordan in ‘I Am Legend 2’. “The script just came in. We’re going with the DVD version where my character lived.“
Will Robert Neville Come Back in ‘I Am Legend 2’?
Smith says his character Robert Neville dies in the original film’s ending, an alternative ending on the DVD reveals his survival. The sequel will unfold in that alternate world.
Smith said, “I have a call with Michael B. Jordan tomorrow. The script just came in. I’m probably giving away too much information. Smith added, “We’re going with the mythology of the DVD version where my character lived; I can’t tell you anymore, but Michael B. Jordan is in, and we’re doing it.”
Back in July 2023, Goldsman, the writer of the ‘I Am Legend’ sequel, revealed that he had started writing the script before the writers’ strike. In February 2023, it was announced that a sequel to ‘I Am Legend’ was in development. The sequel will not follow the original theatrical ending but instead continue from the alternate ending where Will Smith’s character survives. The decision to ignore the original ending raises questions about how the sequel will address this change, but no further details were provided in the announcement. Watch the alternate ending below.
‘I Am Legend’ was released in 2007. The post-apocalyptic sci-fi film stars Smith as a scientist named Robert Neville, the last human survivor in New York City after a virus turns most of humanity into aggressive creatures. Neville searches for a cure while battling loneliness. He encounters other survivors and sacrifices himself to save them. The film grossed over $585 million worldwide.
The release date for ‘I Am Legend 2’ is currently unknown. Stay tuned for updates.
