Craig Gillespie’s ‘Dumb Money’ is a film based on the book “The Antisocial Network: The GameStop Short Squeeze and the Ragtag Group of Amateur Traders That Brought Wall Street to Its Knees” by Ben Mezrich. The screenplay, written by Lauren Schuker Blum and Rebecca Angelo, captures various scenarios that unfolded during the GameStop trading frenzy.
Gillespie drew inspiration from his son’s experiences, incorporating fictionalized amalgams of smaller buyers into the story. In an interview with Vanity Fair, Gillespie shared, “We aimed to represent the different groups involved – the early traders who profited, those who joined late, and the unfortunate ones who held on without selling.”
America Ferrera said, “Money was only one element of that.” Ferrera added, “In fact, she had far more to lose than to gain. There was this element of being a part of something big, something that felt like sticking it to the people on top. There was a real defiance in it.”
‘Dumb Money’ hits theaters on October 20, 2023, by Stage 6 Films and Sony Pictures Releasing.
