HBO has greenlit the new Harry Potter series and locked in two key creative team members.
Francesca Gardiner (‘Succession’) has been set as the showrunner for the upcoming ‘Harry Potter’ series, with Mark Mylod (‘The Menu’) set to direct multiple episodes.
On the X platform, Max announced the news with the message, “All aboard the Hogwarts Express! Francesca Gardiner and Mark Mylod will executive produce the new HBO Original Series, Harry Potter, with Gardiner as showrunner and Mylod directing multiple episodes. Coming soon to Max.”
The Harry Potter series will be a “faithful adaptation” of author J.K. Rowling’s mega-selling fantasy series about the young British wizard. According to HBO, “The series will feature a new cast to lead a new generation of fandom, replete with the fantastic detail and beloved characters Harry Potter fans have cherished for over twenty-five years — in it.”
In a statement, Rowling said, “I’m truly thrilled to announce our director and writer, both of whom I interviewed as part of the production team. Both have a genuine passion for Harry Potter and having read Francesca’s pilot script and heard Mark’s vision, I’m certain the TV show will more than live up to expectations.”
The show’s cast details have not yet been revealed. It is unclear who will play the roles of Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint in the film series. Rowling will serve as an executive producer of the series but isn’t expected to have day-to-day involvement. Gardiner and Mylod will executive produce the series alongside Rowling and her Bronté Film and TV partners Neil Blair and Ruth Kenley-Letts, as well as David Heyman, who produced the movie franchise. Warner Bros. Television and Bronté Film and TV will produce the show.
The show is set to premiere on Max in 2026.
