Warning: This post contains potential spoilers for Marvel’s Avengers: Doomsday.
The extended scene in Avengers: Endgame Encore features an additional sequence in which Hayley Atwell’s Peggy Carter and Chris Evans’ Steve Rogers are interrupted during their dance by Tom Hiddleston’s Loki. The story continues from this point in Avengers: Doomsday. Director Anthony Russo said Steve Rogers’ decision to travel back in time at the end of Avengers: Endgame directly sets the stage for Avengers: Doomsday. Anthony said, “In that moment, that’s where Doomsday is born.”
Marvel kept Atwell’s involvement in Avengers: Doomsday under wraps during filming and revealed her return at San Diego Comic-Con 2026. According to Atwell, multiple versions of Peggy Carter’s storyline were filmed, with some making the cut while others were scrapped.
In a recent interview with The Playlist, Atwell said, “We tried different things, we shot different things, there were different storylines, some picked up, some developed, some dropped away.” She also expressed confidence in Marvel’s plans for the characters.

Speaking to Variety, Atwell says the “pure” bond between Peggy Carter and Steve Rogers is why she returned for Avengers: Doomsday:
“You can’t replace human connection. If, at the core, it’s characters that we’re fully invested in and care about, then we’ll go on that ride.”
There are plot rumors that the original Peggy Carter will die in Avengers: Doomsday, and a Latverian witch will use her face to psychologically torment Steve Rogers. During their confrontation, Steve removes the witch’s mask, only for her to transform into Peggy’s likeness and manipulate him.
Hayley Atwell opened up about returning as Peggy Carter in Avengers: Doomsday.
She said, “I think it’s always testament to the fans that they are committed to the enduring love story between Steve and Peggy. And to be able to come back in that kind of way, it feels very bittersweet and nostalgic, but really comes from the fans wanting that.”
Directed by Anthony and Joe Russo and written by Michael Waldron, Stephen McFeely, Chris McKenna, and Erik Sommers.
“Universes collide, and the Multiverse Saga begins its final chapter in Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Doomsday. Beloved heroes from three distinct universes will be set on a deadly collision course and ultimately face an existential threat unlike anything they’ve ever encountered. This epic film will lay the foundation for the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Robert Downey Jr., who led the Avengers series as Iron Man, makes a shocking return as the evil scientist Doctor Doom. Familiar heroes like Steve Rogers and Thor are joined by a new generation of heroes, hinting at the largest assembly in history.”
