HBO has officially cast the lead trio for its upcoming Harry Potter TV series, following auditions from over 30,000 actors since the studio launched an open casting call in fall 2024.
Marking the start of a new era for the Wizarding World franchise, Dominic McLaughlin will play Harry Potter, Arabella Stanton will play Hermione Granger, and Alastair Stout will portray Ron Weasley. Filming is set to begin this summer.
In a statement, showrunner Francesca Gardiner and executive producer/director Mark Mylod said, “After an extraordinary search led by casting directors Lucy Bevan and Emily Brockmann, we are delighted to announce that we have found our Harry, Hermione, and Ron. The talent of these three unique actors is wonderful to behold, and we cannot wait for the world to witness their magic together on screen. We would like to thank the tens of thousands of children who auditioned — it’s been a real pleasure to discover the incredible young talent out there.”
According to HBO’s television boss Channing Dungey, the Harry Potter series will be “a little bit more in-depth” compared to a two-hour film. Dungey described working with J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter books as “an unbelievable dream.”

The Harry Potter TV series is written and showrun by Gardiner, with Mylod serving as executive producer and directing multiple episodes. According to HBO, “The series will feature a new cast to lead a new generation of fandom, replete with the fantastic detail and beloved characters Harry Potter fans have cherished for over twenty-five years — in it.”
