James Cameron Says He’s Moving Beyond Avatar for the “Last Act” of His Career

James Cameron is now moving on from the Avatar franchise, as he’s thinking about the other stories he wants to tell.

According to Cameron, he’s mapping out the “last act” of his career and planning his future projects. Cameron previously told Empire that the Avatar movies are “simply too massive, too expensive, and too time-consuming to keep making the same way.”

Earlier this year, Cameron said Avatar 4 was “very likely,” but stopped short of officially confirming the project.

In an interview with Denise Donlon after James Cameron received the 2026 Governor General’s Prize in Canada, he said the last phase of his filmmaking career will be different, and it is more likely that he will not direct Avatar 4 and Avatar 5.

Cameron said that “over the last two weeks” he has “literally mapped out” what his upcoming films will look like. “I started with, ‘What will do the most good?’ I put that in block letters at the top,” added Cameron. “And I started looking at all the projects I’m most fond of, asking, ‘How’s this going to improve our condition? How’s that going to make the world better for our kids?'”

Although Cameron says he has not yet decided what the final chapter of his career will look like, he also says his long-term plans are still evolving.

“I haven’t made any decisions yet. I’m still in this liminal state of mapping out, you know, kind of the last act. And I don’t know if that last act will last a year or 20 years.”

Avatar 4 Will Change Everything, Says Sam Worthington

In a recent interview with CBS Mornings (via ScreenRant), Sam Worthington revealed that he has already read the scripts for both Avatar 4 and Avatar 5. According to Worthington, Avatar 4 introduces major new elements that reshape the world of Pandora and completely change the dynamic of the Avatar saga.

Worthington said, “I’ve read them. I’m really lucky. I’ve read four and five, and four is my favourite, so hopefully we get to keep journeying. It completely changes the whole dynamic and the whole world.”

Currently, Avatar 4 remains on track for a December 19, 2029 theatrical release, with Worthington, Zoe Saldaña, and Stephen Lang returning.
