It’s true that Sony had planned a Spider-Man movie featuring the Sinister Six, but it didn’t go into production.
Recently, concept artist Victor J. Martinez has shared concept art from a canceled Spider-Man movie. The artwork is believed to be from Sony’s scrapped Sinister Six movie, which was planned as a spin-off of Andrew Garfield‘s Spider-Man.
On Instagram, he shared the image and wrote, “SPIDER-MAN — sharing with you some concept art I did for an unmade/untitled Spider-Man film from years ago.
This would’ve been a fun one with lots of villains… 6 to be exact!… iykyk.”
The studio is reportedly rethinking its strategy following the disappointing performances of Madame Web, Morbius, and Kraven the Hunter. Despite the success of Tom Hardy’s Venom trilogy, Sony’s recent Marvel spin-offs failed to gain strong critical and commercial support. Rothman said Sony never viewed the franchise as a “Sony-Marvel Universe.”
Rothman said, “Right now, we don’t know. We never looked at it as the ‘Sony-Marvel Universe.’ We looked at whether there were worthwhile movies to make with other characters. At the moment, there are none in active development.”
Back in 2017, director Marc Webb, in an interview with Den of Geek (via ScreenRant), confirmed that Sony had planned a Sinister Six movie before The Amazing Spider-Man 3. Webb revealed that the Sinister Six spin-off was intended to be made before the third Spider-Man film.
Webb said, “Yeah, we were talking about the Sinister Six. They were going to make a Sinister Six movie before we did the third one. But I wanted… Chris Cooper was going to come back and play the Goblin. We were going to freeze his head, and then he was going to be brought back to life. And then there was that character called The Gentleman. We had some notions about how to do it, but I think maybe we were thinking too far ahead when we started building in those things. But it was a fun exercise. I look back very fondly on those days.”
Marvel and Sony’s Spider-Man: Brand New Day is now playing in theaters. The film has already become the highest-grossing movie of 2026. It crossed the $1.2 billion mark at the global box office and is now on track to surpass $1.7 billion worldwide this coming weekend.
