The filming for James Cameron‘s ‘Avatar 4‘ has started, as confirmed by Stephen Lang on social media. Set to release by the end of 2029, the production may introduce new technologies, similar to those used in ‘Avatar: The Way of Water‘.
On Instagram, Lang marked the start of Avatar 4 filming with a photo in a motion capture suit bearing Colonel Quaritch‘s name. His caption, ‘Deja Blu all over again,’ pays homage to his character. See the post below.
Directed by Cameron, the screenplay for the upcoming Avatar 4 is written by Cameron and Josh Friedman. The potential title, ‘Avatar: The Tulkun Rider,’ is under consideration. Distributed by 20th Century Studios, it serves as the sequel to the anticipated 2025 release, Avatar 3, and marks the fourth installment in the Avatar franchise.
Cameron reveals parts of Avatar 4 have been filmed, despite initial plans to start principal photography after Avatar 3’s release.
The cast includes Sam Worthington as Jake Sully, Zoe Saldaña as Neytiri, Sigourney Weaver as Kiri, Lang as Colonel Miles Quaritch, Giovanni Ribisi as Parker Selfridge, Cliff Curtis as Tonowari, CCH Pounder as Mo’at, Jack Champion as Miles “Spider” Socorro, David Thewlis as Peylak, Oona Chaplin as Varang, Kate Winslet as Ronal, Britain Dalton as Lo’ak, and Trinity Jo-Li Bliss as Tuktirey (“Tuk”), with additional roles played by Bailey Bass as Tsireya (“Reya”) and others.
Avatar 4: Early Filming Begins for Time Jump Sequence
In an interview with People, Cameron revealed that the decision to start shooting Avatar 4 earlier was driven by a planned time jump in the movie.
Cameron said, “We even did part of movie four because our young characters are all going to have a big-time jump in movie four.” Cameron added, “We see them, and then we go away for six years, and we come back. And so the part where we come back is the part we haven’t shot yet. So we’ll start on that after three is released.”
Avatar 4 faced five delays since its 2010 announcement alongside Avatar 3. The latest delay last June was due to WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. Cameron confirmed shooting the first act in 2022, impressing 20th Century Studios. As scheduled, Avatar 4 releases 20 years after the original, a $2.92 billion worldwide hit, with ‘Avatar: The Way of Water’ grossing $2.32 billion worldwide.
Release Date:
‘Avatar 4’ will hit theaters on December 21, 2029, by 20th Century Studios.
