James Gunn revealed that he had written a short film that explained the origin of Rocket and Groot‘s meeting, although it was never made. According to Gunn, Tibius Lark revealed to Rocket that he had been caring for Groot for several years.
James Gunn’s Short Film Revealing Rocket and Groot’s Origin
On Meta’s Threads, Gunn disclosed that the film had been storyboarded, location scouted, and even had test footage created, which was shown at SDCC in a trailer compiled after 12 days of shooting. However, due to time constraints with the amplified production of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 1, he couldn’t proceed with the film. In this short film, Tibius Lark, Groot, and Rocket are depicted as imprisoned in a deep well, with Tibius nearing death. He conveyed to Rocket that he had been taking care of Groot for many years.
Tibius Lark, a former zookeeper in a dilapidated galactic-side zoo, revealed that he had rescued Groot, who was being exhibited there. He emphasized Groot’s loyalty and asked Rocket to look after him before he passed away. In his final moments, Rocket discovered that Tibius was actually a robot, with his lower body exposed and mechanical.
The guards stationed above the ground noticed a rumbling sound and turned to witness Rocket and Groot emerging from the ground. Rocket was perched on Groot’s shoulder, wielding a machine gun crafted from Tibius Lark’s body. Rocket swiftly eliminated the guards, allowing them to escape together. This marked the beginning of their companionship until they eventually encountered the Guardians.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 gives a legendary ending to the legendary characters. The film had almost all the elements of laughter, emotional moments, and incredible actions.
