Marvel Studios is bringing back the Avengers villain once again to the MCU. At the end of Avengers: Age of Ultron, Vision confronts Ultron’s final surviving body. After a brief conversation, Vision destroys him, and Ultron and his presence are believed to have been killed. However, the new Marvel Television series VisionQuest will reveal that Ultron has been imprisoned inside Vision’s mind.
In WandaVision, Vision was rebuilt by S.W.O.R.D. without his memories or emotions, followed by his parts being restructured from Avengers: Infinity War. His past was restored by the Hex Vision during the final fight, and Vision left.
Following that, Vision enters an internal virtual reality as part of his journey of self-discovery. Inside this virtual world, Ultron, EDITH, DUM-E, and U appear in human-avatar forms. The different AIs are there to help Vision process his experiences and understand himself better.
Ultron Has Been Painting and ‘Making Trouble’ Inside Vision’s Mind
In a recent interview with Rotten Tomatoes, James Spader, who returns in the VisionQuest series, reveals where Ultron has been since the events of Avengers: Age of Ultron. Ultron has been trapped inside Vision’s mind.
During that time, he has had access to the internet, television, and history, absorbing everything he can. Spader says Ultron has also been spending time painting and “stirring up trouble.” He remains trapped with Vision, a character Ultron both “adores” and “hates.”
Ultron also shares the space with other AIs, though Spader says he “couldn’t give a damn” about them.
Spader said, “The downstairs and the outside are this really strange, nightmarish, in a certain way, mansion, but in a pastoral setting, and Ultron lives in a very urban loft upstairs, and many stories upstairs, isn’t it, like hundreds of stories or something, and he’s just been imprisoned for, by now, it would be what, 14 years or something.”
He added, “He’s been in prison. He’s had access to the internet, television, history, and he’s just been consuming, and he’s been painting. He’s become a painter… He’s just making trouble in this house with [Vision], who he loves and hates, and all these other AIs who he couldn’t give a s–t about.”
Recently, showrunner Terry Matalas told Empire that VisionQuest is “all about what it means to be a human being.”
“I think ultimately, what Vision is going through are things that we all go through and deal with: trauma, relationships, and how we react to experiencing love or not experiencing it. It’s strange that a show about an AI is the most human of them all.”
Synopsis: “When ‘VisionQuest’ begins, Vision, rebooted and having escaped from those who sought to weaponize him, has been in hiding. Searching for new meaning, he consults the AI personas embedded in his programming, including F.R.I.D.A.Y., E.D.I.T.H., J.A.R.V.I.S., and the infamous Ultron. His discreet existence ends when a bounty placed on his head thrusts him on the run with Thomas Shepard, a mysterious boy who may be Vision’s son, reincarnate. As Vision evades capture, he must confront his nature, resist Ultron’s influence, and unravel the enigma that is his young companion if he’s to survive.”
The show stars Paul Bettany as Vision, James Spader as Ultron, Ruaridh Mollica as Tommy Maximoff/Speed and Thomas Shepherd, Todd Stashwick as Paladin, T’Nia Miller as Jocasta, Lauren Morais as Lisa Molinari, Orla Brady as F.R.I.D.A.Y., Diane Morgan as an associate of Paladin, Polly Frame, Henry Lewis as D.U.M.-E, Jonathan Sayer as U, Emily Hampshire as E.D.I.T.H., and James D’Arcy as J.A.R.V.I.S. Faran Tahir also reprises his role as Raza, with Cristian Lavin and Mary McDonnell appearing in undisclosed roles.
The series is directed by Christopher J. Byrne, Gandja Monteiro, Vincenzo Natali, Terry Matalas, and written by Terry Matalas, Cindy Appel, Christopher Monfette, Nicole Falsetti, and Matthew Okumura.
VisionQuest premieres October 14, 2026, on Disney+, with the eight-episode series officially included in Phase Six of the MCU.
