The first-look set image of Jensen Ackles returning as Ben/Soldier Boy on the set of The Boys prequel series Vought Rising has leaked online during filming in Toronto, Canada.
Described as a “twisted murder mystery,” the show is set in the 1950s, exploring Vought’s early history.
During Creation Entertainment’s The Road So Far… The Road Ahead convention in Novi, Michigan, Ackles opened up about Vought Rising and its impact on his beloved character. He explained that ‘the series will peel back the bravado to reveal a more open, possibly even idealistic, side of the character.’
Ackles said, “It’s certainly going to be looking at the world through a different lens because this is the genesis of it all. Soldier Boy specifically hasn’t had years or decades of being that guy.” He added, “He’s still trying to figure out what that is and who he’s going to be. So it’s a kind of coming-of-age story for him—from where he was to where he got. It’s going to be a little bit of a different flavor in how he interacts and how he is.”
Ackles continued, “He hasn’t had decades to mask [his feelings] and build up a gruff exterior, and the show will peel a lot of that away so you see a more vulnerable and open version of the character… It’s about what drove him to be where he is and the insecurity that he has.”
Vought Rising is developed by Eric Kripke and Paul Grellong for Prime Video and is based on the comic book of the same name by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson.
The show is set in the 1950s, long before the events of the main series. It follows a twisted murder mystery exploring the origins of Vought International, the early exploits of Soldier Boy, and the diabolical maneuvers of Aya Cash‘s Stormfront. Episode 101 is titled ‘Red Scare,’ written by Grellong and directed by Sam Miller, and is said to have a politically charged Cold War–era theme.
