Marvel Studios is no longer developing the sequel to Eternals. Following SDCC and Disney’s D23 Fan Event, there hasn’t been a single hint of Eternals 2. Variety has nearly confirmed that the film’s plans have reportedly been scrapped.
In a recent interview with Inverse, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige discussed the Eternals sequel and how their lingering storylines will impact the upcoming Captain America: Brave New World movie.
Feige said, “There are no immediate plans for Eternals 2.” Feige added, “There are, and I think you’ve seen maybe in a trailer we’ve released recently, an acknowledgment of some of those events. Certain giant things came out of the ocean.”
Captain America: Brave New World, starring Anthony Mackie as Sam Wilson/Captain America and Harrison Ford as Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross/Red Hulk, will focus on the battle over Tiamut Island, where the Eternals defeated a giant Celestial emerging from the Earth’s core. Ross seeks to claim the remains of Tiamut, which are made of Adamantium.
Insider Daniel Richtman also confirmed that ‘Eternals 2’ will not happen. Feige wants it to be made, but the CEO of Disney, Bob Iger, thinks it’s a guaranteed flop. Now, Marvel is focusing on fewer risks with their movies and more guaranteed hits.
Eternals Will Return in What If…? Season 3
It doesn’t mean that the Eternals members may not make their appearance in the MCU—they are next going to appear in What If…? Season 3. An episode titled ‘What If the Eternals Never Stopped the Emergence?’ will feature the return of Eternals members Sersi, Ikaris, Thena, Ajak, Kingo, Phastos, Makkari, Druig, and Gilgamesh. It follows a scenario where the Eternals could not prevent the catastrophic event that threatens to destroy Earth. Season 3 is scheduled to premiere on Disney+ in 2025.
‘Eternals,’ released in 2021, was directed by Zhao, who co-wrote the screenplay with Patrick Burleigh, Ryan Firpo, and Kaz Firpo. The film stars Richard Madden as Ikaris, Gemma Chan as Sersi, Kumail Nanjiani as Kingo, Lia McHugh as Sprite, Brian Tyree Henry as Phastos, Lauren Ridloff as Makkari, Barry Keoghan as Druig, Don Lee as Gilgamesh, Harish Patel as Karun Patel, Bill Skarsgård as Kro, with Kit Harington as Dane Whitman, Salma Hayek as Ajak, and Angelina Jolie as Thena. Despite grossing $402 million worldwide at the box office, the film received a poor response from both critics and audiences alike.
