Marvel Studios is planning to change the upcoming Young Avengers from a feature film to a Disney+ series.
According to insider Daniel Richtman in his latest Patreon post, Marvel’s Young Avengers project will now be developed as a TV show and retitled Champions — due to some of the actors no longer being considered “young.” The shift from a film to a series is also reportedly influenced by the underperformance of The Marvels at the box office.
As per the source, Kate Bishop (Hailee Steinfeld) will reportedly be the leader of the Champions, with other members of the team including Ms. Marvel (Iman Vellani), Cassie Lang (Kathryn Newton), America Chavez (Xochitl Gomez), Wiccan (Joe Locke), Ironheart (Dominique Thorne), Speed (to be cast), Hulkling (possibly introduced in future projects), and Viv (to be cast).
In an interview with Yahoo Entertainment, Vellani said she wants the Young Avengers to be led by Kamala Khan. Vellani explained, “Hailee and I had a really fun back and forth.” She also spoke about The Marvels post-credits scene, which shows Kamala inviting Kate to be part of a ‘Young Avengers’ initiative. Vellani added, “Tonally, it wouldn’t have made sense if we kept joking about [the Young Avengers team], but we were having so much fun bouncing off each other.”
The Champions project is set to begin production in late 2025 to early 2026. Marvel Studios has already started searching for a showrunner.
Recently, America Chavez, Riri Williams, and Cassie Lang appeared together at the “Worlds of Marvel” restaurant on the Disney Treasure cruise. Watch the clip below.
