Mortal Kombat II is set to hit theaters in two months, and producer Todd Garner has teased that the Scorpion vs. Sub-Zero rivalry remains one of the franchise’s most iconic storylines. He explained that Bi-Han’s transformation into Noob Saibot adds an even richer layer of lore for longtime fans of the games.
According to Garner, Bi-Han’s death and eventual resurrection as Noob Saibot bring one of Mortal Kombat’s most dramatic twists directly into the film. Rather than introducing a new villain out of nowhere, Mortal Kombat II turns Bi-Han into something darker, which makes his rivalry with Scorpion far more personal and meaningful than a simple clash of elemental powers.

In 2021’s Mortal Kombat, fire vs. ice already served as a striking visual conflict. Now, audiences will witness Scorpion facing a shadow-wielding Noob Saibot in what Garner describes as a “supernatural battle.” He calls their storyline “one of the most compelling” in the franchise, confirming that Mortal Kombat II will embrace the fan-favorite mythos instead of relying solely on surface-level fights.
While focusing on Scorpion and Bi-Han’s story, the sequel is also delivering fan service by bringing in long-demanded characters like Johnny Cage. In the film, Cage as a main protagonist balances the heavy, tragic storyline with humor, charisma, and a grounded Earthrealm perspective.

Speaking to ComicBook.com, Garner said, “In the decades of Mortal Kombat lore, the relationship between Scorpion and Bi-Han, the original Sub-Zero, has unfolded as a story of violence, betrayal, and vengeance.”
Garner added, “Scorpion, of the Shirai Ryu clan, is haunted by the tragic murders of his family at the hands of Bi-Han. Following his own death, Scorpion’s spirit transforms into a merciless wraith, consumed by an insatiable thirst for revenge. As Scorpion relentlessly pursues Bi-Han, their intertwined destinies make their rivalry one of the most compelling storylines in the entire Mortal Kombat franchise.”
Recently, director Simon McQuoid said in an interview that this version of Bi-Han is a fan-favorite and mysterious character who demands a costume design that captures the game’s aesthetics while maintaining the realism of the films. The final film design was heavily influenced by Mortal Kombat 1’s Khaos Reigns DLC, where Noob Saibot was introduced with a mix of reflective armor and traditional Lin Kuei ninja elements.
McQuoid said, “To translate his distinctive ‘shadow wraith’ look onto film, we drew most of our inspiration from the recent version of the game. Cappi had the brilliant idea of creating unique materials and finishes that would reflect the light while always being true to Bi-Han’s singular idea of being a shadow. His body was made of low-gloss, textured black rubber under-skin, while his armor was organic in style and featured a dark grey pearlescent reflective finish.” He added, “The shadow clone within him is a different character, so we needed a different costume and color, but they shared materials, ensuring his unique look was clearly separated from his shadow clone while always being born from the same character.”
