Netflix has decided not to release ‘The Mothership,’ a sci-fi thriller with Halle Berry that finished filming in 2021. The film, initially scheduled for a 2024 release, will not be made available by the studio.
Why Did Netflix Cancel ‘The Mothership’?
According to Jeff Sneider’s The InSneider newsletter, ‘The Mothership’ needed major reshoots, but they would be expensive and tricky. One problem was that the young actors in important roles had grown a lot since filming ended over two years ago. The movie also faced delays in finishing post-production, which played a part in the decision not to do the reshoots.
The film is written and directed by Matthew Charman. In the film, Sara Morse, played by Berry, stars alongside Molly Parker, Omari Hardwick, Sydney Lemmon, Rafael Silva, John Ortiz, and Paul Guilfoyle.
According to the Netflix logline for ‘The Mothership,’ “a sci-fi adventure that follows Sara Morse (Berry) one year since her husband mysteriously vanished from their rural farm. When she discovers a strange, extraterrestrial object underneath their home, Sara and her kids embark on a race to find their husband, father, and most importantly, the truth.”
Filming started on June 14, 2021, and ended on August 9, 2021, in Boston, Massachusetts.
‘Berry worked with Netflix before on the 2020 film “Bruised,’ where she had both acting and directing roles. She’s also slated to come back to Netflix for the upcoming movie ‘The Union,’ co-starring with Mark Wahlberg and J. K. Simmons.
