The Russo brothers have used a combination of practical performance, performance capture, and digital enhancements to create Doctor Doom in Avengers: Doomsday. Robert Downey Jr. used partial motion capture, body movement, and subtle eye movements to convey emotion and intensity for his Doctor Doom character in the movie.
In a recent interview with Empire Magazine, Anthony Russo says Downey was fully performing the character on set, with the filmmakers later getting “a second pass” through digital work. Anthony says there was a lot of experimental work involved in creating Doctor Doom. He described Downey’s performance as “incredible” and “unexpected.”
Joe Russo confirms that the performance itself is “a combination of things,” including performance capture, something Downey Jr. saw first-hand with James Spader on Age Of Ultron and Josh Brolin on Infinity War / Endgame.
“I think Downey had a lot of the same fun on this with Doom,” says Anthony Russo. “He was on set performing everything. Because of the way we’re creating the character with a digital layer, we also get a second pass at him in terms of what we can do on a digital level. There was a lot of experimental performance. It’s incredible, but also unexpected. What he brings to the table, you couldn’t see coming.”
Joe Russo says there are “zero similarities” between Tony Stark and Doctor Doom.
He said, “Certainly, there seems to be nothing of Tony Stark in Downey Jr’s imperious and intimidating Doom. ‘Zero similarities,’ is how Joe Russo puts it. With around three months to go, we’re close to finding out just how stark that contrast is.”
Doctor Doom Was Once Friends With Reed Richards and Sue Storm
Doom not only hails from the Fantastic Four’s universe, but is a former friend of Reed Richards and Sue Storm. “He was always the smartest guy in the room,” explains Vanessa Kirby’s Sue in a voiceover. “He used to be kind. He used to be caring.”
The Doom who shows up in Doomsday is far from the kind-and-caring type. Whether he’s trying to prevent an incursion from destroying his own universe, or has some other sinister agenda, is not yet known. But the smartest guy in the room also seems to be the strongest, thanks to a sharp scientific mind and magical abilities that put him up there with Doctor Strange and The Great Soprendo.
The footage closed with an extended glimpse at the showdown between Chris Hemsworth’s Thor and Doom that was seen in the trailer. There, it ended with Doom stopping Thor in his tracks with just two fingers. Here, it had Doom intoning, “Hell answers to me,” before conjuring a squadron of Sentinels, the giant mutant-killing robots who have made the X-Men’s lives a misery. Thor and chums have got their work cut out. “It’s an incredibly ambitious film,” Joe Russo said, “and it’s by far and away the biggest crossover that Marvel’s ever seen.”
Directed by the Russo brothers from a screenplay by their longtime collaborator Stephen McFeely and Michael Waldron.
