The new unused concept art for Giancarlo Esposito‘s Sidewinder from Marvel’s Captain America: Brave New World has been revealed. According to creative art director Michael Blackbear Uwandi, Sidewinder’s design is inspired by the Naga Raksha, with abstracted elements from the original character.
On Instagram, Uwandi has shared the concept art for Sidewinder. The Serpent Society is featured in Captain America: Brave New World, with each member designed with a techwear theme. Also, each character is tied to a cultural serpent reflecting their identity.

It is reported that Sidewinder has an invisibility ability hinted at through his clothing design.
“Serpent Society for Captain America: Brave New World. Keeping with the techwear theme, I tied each member to a cultural serpent that reflects their identity. For Sidewinder, I drew inspiration from the Naga Raksha, abstracting its design while retaining elements of the original character. Since he can turn invisible, I hinted at that ability through his clothing.”
The reason Sidewinder looks so different in this concept art is that the villain originally had a much different power set in Captain America: Brave New World. According to Michael Blackbear Uwandi, this design was meant to be the “first phase” of the character, integrating nano tattoos. By the time Giancarlo Esposito was cast, plans for the character had already changed.
“Serpent Society for Captain America Brave New World. Very early iteration of nano tattoos. The snake skin mask was the idea of a “first phase” transformation for the characters. This was the first take on Side Winder before the actor was cast. The actor ultimately ended up being Giancarlo Esposito.”
Directed by Julius Onah from a screenplay by Malcolm Spellman, Dalan Musson, and Matthew Orton. The film stars Anthony Mackie as Sam Wilson/Captain America, Danny Danny Ramirez as Joaquín Torres/Falcon, Blake Tim Blake Nelson as Samuel Sterns/Leader, Carl Lumbly as Isaiah Bradley, Harrison Ford as President Thaddeus Ross, Liv Tyler as Betty Ross, Haas as Ruth Bat-Seraph/Sabra, Esposito as Sidewinder, Rosa Salazar, and Xosha Roquemore.
In Captain America: Brave New World, after executing a successful mission in Mexico, Sam (Mackie) and his partner Joaquin/Falcon (Ramirez) are invited to the White House to meet with President Ross (Ford). He asks Sam, the new Captain America, to reconstitute the Avengers Initiative. However, they almost immediately square off on opposite sides when an assassination attempt occurs.
Captain America: Brave New World is now streaming on Disney+.
