Following the three successful movies in the Sonic the Hedgehog film series, the fourth installment is already in development at Paramount, with a release date set for March 2027.
According to industry insider Daniel Richtman (DanielRPK), Paramount and SEGA are reportedly considering a major change to the title of Sonic the Hedgehog 4. The studios are looking to rename the fourth Sonic movie to “Sonic CD,” directly referencing the classic 1993 video game Sonic CD, which was released for the Sega CD console add-on.

Daniel Richtman already reported that Sonic 4 will feature a time-travel plot.
Note: This is not the final title at the moment, but it is currently being considered.
The Sonic CD game is an important part of the series for three main reasons. It introduced the popular character Amy Rose, the villain Metal Sonic, and included a special time-travel feature that let Sonic race through the past, present, and future of a mysterious planet.
At the end of Sonic the Hedgehog 3, Team Sonic (Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Tom, and Maddie) survives, while Robotnik is destroyed in the explosion of the Eclipse Cannon. But the action doesn’t stop there — the mid-credits scene introduces Amy Rose and several Metal Sonics — and the post-credits scene confirms that Shadow survived the final battle. Although his face isn’t shown, his iconic shoes give him away — and he is seen picking up one of his gold wrist cuffs from a crater.
Jeff Fowler, who directed the three Sonic the Hedgehog films, will return to direct the fourth movie from a screenplay by Pat Casey, John Whittington, and Josh Miller. Filming is set to begin soon in Vancouver, Canada.
Sonic the Hedgehog 4 / Sonic CD will hit theaters on March 19, 2027, by Paramount Pictures.
