The Russo Brothers confirmed that Doctor Doom‘s resemblance to Tony Stark will be explained in Avengers: Doomsday.
Director Joe Russo said fans will understand why Doctor Doom looks like Tony Stark, while confirming that Doom is not Tony Stark. Joe refused to reveal spoilers, saying, “It will all make sense when you watch the movies.”
In a recent interview with Soundsphere Magazine, Joe Russo called the project a “giant experiment,” saying Marvel is doing something that has never been attempted before. Meanwhile, Anthony Russo praised Robert Downey Jr.‘s performance, describing Doctor Doom as a completely new character that audiences “can’t even guess at.”
Joe said, “There’s no better actor in the world than Robert Downey. I’m not going to give away anything. It will all make sense when you watch the movies. What we love about telling these stories is that they’re serialized. This is a giant experiment. Nobody’s ever done anything like this before. Marvel is unique. You’re taking all these different franchises and combining them into overarching stories. If you’re a fan of the comics like I am—I still have my comic book collection. I’m 54 years old, and I love the idea of stories that keep shifting, changing, surprising you, reinventing themselves, and then surprising you all over again.”
How the Russo Brothers Are Managing Avengers: Doomsday‘s Huge Ensemble Cast

The Russo Brothers say every character in Avengers: Doomsday will have a meaningful perspective, despite the film’s massive ensemble cast. According to the directors, they approach the narrative through the eyes of each individual character, including those with smaller roles. Even characters who appear briefly are treated as important parts of the story.
Anthony said, “Even though we’re making a two-and-a-half-hour, three-act film, it is generally built around a single character arc. We have a creative process where we envision the movie and its narrative from each individual character’s point of view, and we shape the story through that character’s perspective.”
He added, “Even if that character is only intersecting with a small part of the story, it’s creatively energizing to occasionally filter the film through the perspective of even a minor character.”
