‘Silk: Spider Society‘ is reportedly undergoing a developmental overhaul, with the studio letting go of its entire writers’ room, as confirmed by The Ankler.
The show, created by Tom Spezialy and Angela Kang, is the first television series in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe. It will be released on Amazon Prime Video and MGM+. Deadline previously reported that the Silk writers’ room was expected to reconvene in mid to late January.
What is the Plot of ‘Silk: Spider Society’?
‘Silk: Spider Society’ follows Cindy Moon, a Korean-American woman bitten by the same spider that bit Peter Parker, as she escapes imprisonment and searches for her missing family on her way to becoming the superhero known as Silk.
One source hints that Silk is aiming for a male audience, though Amazon declined to comment. The studio and Prime Video have succeeded with male-centric series like Reacher and Jack Ryan, but they’ve also thrived with female-oriented shows like The Summer I Turned Pretty. Meanwhile, Sony’s Madame Web, starring Dakota Johnson, is currently playing in theaters.
In an interview, Katherine Pope, president of Sony Pictures Television Studios, said, “It’s a huge focus certainly for all of us here, and for me in particular. I was already a fan of Angela Kang, so I’m really, really excited to be working with her on Silk. She’s just brilliant and a total pro.” Pope added, “This is also an example of working really closely with Tom Rothman and Sanford Panitch, and the motion picture group, to make sure that we are in lockstep with them and also executing at the same level. They’ve done such an incredible job with that franchise, so we want to make sure we’re executing at that level.”
‘Spider-Man Noir’ Live-Action in Development
The series was the first live-action Marvel-Sony collaboration to be greenlit by Amazon. Also in development is Spider-Man Noir, with talks of Nicolas Cage potentially starring in the lead role.
Produced by the duo behind Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, with co-executive producers Kai Wu and Jim Barnes.
