It’s official: a fourth installment in the Sonic the Hedgehog film franchise is in development at Paramount, which is potentially coming under new ownership by Skydance. The movie is set to arrive in Spring 2027. Check out the first-look logo below.
According to Deadline, Sonic the Hedgehog 4 is set to hit theaters on March 19, 2027, a week before Easter and just ahead of the sixth MonsterVerse film, which premieres on March 26, 2027.
In the post-credits scene of Sonic the Hedgehog 3, Shadow is revealed to have survived the destruction of the Eclipse Cannon, setting up a fourth installment. Sonic 4 will feature Sonic and Shadow teaming up.
In an interview with Cinema Today, Jim Carrey, who plays Dr. Robotnik in the Sonic movies, says he’s open to returning as Doctor Robotnik for Sonic 4.
Carrey said, “I’m definitely open to the idea… generally, they come to me with the next idea and [if] it sounds fun… I’ll do it… I certainly love this crew, and I love the fans… there’s a lot of really great energy around it.”
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 has become the highest-grossing installment in the franchise, with $218.8M domestically and $425M worldwide.
Sonic 4 is currently in development, with no director or cast attachments confirmed at this time. Jeff Fowler has directed the trilogy so far, but it’s uncertain if he will return. Carrey plays Dr. Robotnik, Ben Schwartz voices Sonic, Idris Elba voices Knuckles, and Keanu Reeves voices Shadow. James Marsden and Tika Sumpter also star.
Skydance may take over Paramount, but the continuation of the Sonic franchise under their leadership demonstrates the brand’s strong market appeal.
