Sony’s Spider-Man spin-off universe is getting a “fresh reboot,” as confirmed by Sony Pictures CEO Tom Rothman.
In a recent interview with The Town, Rothman confirmed that they will be rebooting the Spider-Man spin-off universe, following several underperforming films in the Sonyverse. Movies like Morbius, Madame Web, and Kraven the Hunter failed to make a major impact at the box office.

It has also been confirmed that Sony has already scrapped or paused several planned spin-off projects. However, Rothman did not share specific details about what the reboot will look like. The live-action Sonyverse/Spider-Verse world is expected to be restructured in some way.
Even with the reboot plans, Sony continues to grow the franchise, as a new animated Venom project is currently in development.
Rothman calls Sony’s partnership with Marvel Studios on Spider-Man a major “win-win” for both studios. Sony previously made the strategic decision to collaborate with Marvel Studios to reintroduce Spider-Man in Captain America: Civil War. That partnership led to three highly profitable solo Spider-Man films set within the MCU.
Rothman described the Marvel deal as a “smart and mature decision” made by former Sony heads Amy Pascal and Michael Lynton. He credits the collaboration with Kevin Feige as a key factor in the franchise’s success. The Sony–Marvel agreement remains one of the most successful cross-studio partnerships in modern Hollywood.
As of now, Sony’s upcoming projects include the Spider-Noir series, set to premiere on May 25, 2026; Spider-Man: Brand New Day, scheduled for release on July 31, 2026; and Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, which is currently set to release on June 18, 2027.
