‘Hercules’ is a Disney animated musical film released in 1997. It is loosely based on the legendary hero Hercules from Greek mythology. The film was directed by Ron Clements and John Musker. The film follows Hercules, the son of Zeus and Hera, who is stripped of his immortality as a baby and raised on Earth as a mortal. As he grows up, he realizes his true origins and sets out on a journey to become a true hero and regain his place on Mount Olympus. Along the way, he encounters various mythological characters and creatures, including Philoctetes (Phil), Pegasus, Hades, Megara (Meg), and others.
Disney has already remade other classic movies like Beauty and the Beast, The Jungle Book, and Aladdin in live-action. Hercules has appeared in various forms in movies, TV shows, books, and games, making him a well-known character from mythology in popular culture.
Collider confirmed that the live-action version of ‘Hercules’ will be directed by Guy Ritchie, who previously directed the live-action version of ‘Aladdin’. The script is penned by Dave Callaham. Karen Gilchrist and Jeffrey Silver, who previously collaborated on Disney’s The Lion King remake, are producing the live-action Hercules film. Joe and Anthony Russo, renowned for their Marvel movies, will also produce through their company, AGBO.
In an interview with Total Film (GamesRadar), Joe Russo says the live-action ‘Hercules’ remake will “pay homage to the original with a more modern spin on it.” Russo added, “What Anthony and I love about the original is how funny and subversive it is. I think we try to embrace that sense of humor in the remake.”
‘Hercules’ will begin production in 2024, and the release date is TBA.
