The fifth installment in the Matrix franchise is in development at Warner Bros. Pictures. According to Deadline, Drew Goddard (known for “The Martian” and “The Cabin in the Woods”) is set to write and direct the film.
Directed by Goddard, with franchise co-scribe and co-director Lana Wachowski as executive producer. Produced by Goddard and partner Sarah Esberg under their banner, Goddard Textiles. The plot details have not yet been revealed; hence, we have no idea if it will be a reboot or continuation.
There is no confirmation yet regarding the return of stars Keanu Reeves, Carrie-Anne Moss, Laurence Fishburne, Hugo Weaving, and Jada Pinkett Smith. However, the last film, ‘The Matrix Resurrections’, hinted that Reeves and Moss would return.
In a statement, Jesse Ehrman, Warner Bros. Motion Pictures President of Production, said, “Drew came to Warner Bros. with a new idea that we all believe would be an incredible way to continue the Matrix world, by both honoring what Lana and Lilly began over 25 years ago and offering a unique perspective based on his own love of the series and characters.” Ehrman added, “The entire team at Warner Bros. Discovery is thrilled for Drew to be making this new Matrix film, adding his vision to the cinematic canon the Wachowskis’ spent a quarter of a century building here at the studio.”
Goddard said, “It is not hyperbole to say The Matrix films changed both cinema and my life.” Goddard added, “Lana and Lilly’s exquisite artistry inspires me on a daily basis, and I am beyond grateful for the chance to tell stories in their world.”
In the Matrix franchise, there are four movies to date: ‘The Matrix’ (1999), ‘The Matrix Reloaded’ (2003), ‘The Matrix Revolutions’ (2003), and ‘The Matrix Resurrections’ (2021), which collectively grossed $1.8 billion worldwide. The franchise has won four Oscars.
The release date for ‘The Matrix 5’ is to be announced (TBA). Warner Bros. will soon announce the production details.
