The Obsession star Michael Johnston, who joined the cast of The Mummy 4 alongside Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz, opened up about his role and teased how the movie will return to the formula of the original The Mummy movie. He is also preparing for the role by taking boxing lessons.
In a recent interview with Attitude, Johnston confirmed that he is not playing Rick and Evie’s son, Alex O’Connell, in The Mummy 4 and revealed that he is playing a completely new character.

He said the movie “gives the fans exactly what they want.” Rick and Evie are returning for another adventure. Johnston described the movie as a fast-paced action film with fight scenes, chase sequences, and street-running scenes.
“It’s a new character, but the film is just returning to its original formula. It’s just like that first film. It’s going to give the fans exactly what they want. Rick and Evie are back.”
“We’re going on an adventure again. It’s so exciting. The film rips. It just goes immediately. It’s truly an action film. It’s fight scenes and chase scenes and running through the streets.”
Johnston said he can’t believe he’s part of the franchise. “I’m working with stunt guys and I’m like, ‘Wait, you’re gonna let me do this?’”
He said he’s pulling out all the stops, including taking boxing lessons. “It’s going to be honest to the original film,” he said.
After reading the script, Johnston’s first reaction was, “Oh my God, the fans are going to love this.” The film will avoid being too “expositional” and will keep the story moving with plenty of action. The team behind Ready or Not and the recent Scream films brought a “young, fresh energy” to the project. Johnston said the filmmakers wanted the movie to be “really fun.”
Filming is currently underway in England, where the first look at Fraser as Rick and Weisz as Evelyn was recently spotted on set.

Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett will direct The Mummy 4 from a screenplay by David Coggeshall. The film will continue the original 1990s Mummy franchise while skipping the events of the third installment.
