Universal Pictures has described ‘The Super Mario Bros. Movie‘ as a “new franchise,” indicating the possibility of a sequel.
On the NBCUniversal Studio Group portfolio and Universal Pictures’ official website, ‘The Super Mario Bros. Movie’ is described as a new franchise. Donna Langley, the Chief Content Officer, has positioned Universal as a leader in the marketplace. She successfully expanded and revitalized core franchises such as Fast & Furious, How to Train Your Dragon, Jurassic World, Pitch Perfect, Despicable Me/Minions, Fifty Shades of Grey, Mamma Mia!, Halloween, and The Purge. In 2023, with a strong focus on diversifying their film slate, Langley introduced new franchises like M3GAN, Violent Night, and Illumination’s Super Mario Bros. Movie.
The Super Mario Bros. Movie has earned a cumulative global box office revenue of $1,361.25 million, making it the highest-grossing film ever based on a video game and the second-highest-grossing animated film of all time.
Recently, Chris Pratt, who voices Mario in the film, has revealed that ‘The Super Mario Bros. Movie 2‘ is coming soon. Pratt revealed that once the WGA negotiations are done and the writers are ready, they will begin discussing what comes next for the sequel.
Speaking to ET Online, Pratt teased that a sequel to ‘The Super Mario Bros. Movie’ is “coming soon.” He said, “We’re in the midst of this writers’ strike, and so everything has been paused and put on hold for the right reasons.” Pratt added, “I really do support the WGA and our writers. When the negotiations have been completed and the writers feel comfortable moving forward, then it’ll be time to start talking about what’s next for that.”
The film is based on the iconic Nintendo video games and follows the origin story of the brothers Mario and Luigi, Italian-American plumbers who are transported to an alternate world and become entangled in a battle between the Mushroom Kingdom, led by Princess Peach, and the Koopas, led by Bowser.
Directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic. The film’s voice cast includes Pratt, Anya Taylor-Joy, Charlie Day, Jack Black, Keegan-Michael Key, Seth Rogen, and Fred Armisen. Produced by Universal Pictures, Illumination, and Nintendo.
The Super Mario Bros. Movie is now available on digital platforms like Amazon Prime Video, Vudu, Apple TV+, and Experience 4K on Google Play Movies & TV.
