David Fincher (‘The Killer’) is reportedly “quietly working” on an American version of ‘Squid Game‘ for Netflix.
What is the update on the American version of ‘Squid Game’?
According to reports from World of Reel, Jeff Sneider mentioned on his Hot Mic podcast that the U.S. version of ‘Squid Game’ is in the first stage of development with Fincher, while Netflix has kept this under wraps.
Fincher’s recent films for Netflix include ‘Mank’ (2020), a biographical drama about screenwriter Herman J. Mankiewicz, and ‘The Killer’ (2023), based on the French graphic novel series by Alexis “Matz” Nolent. The ‘Squid Game’ U.S. version marks his third collaboration with Netflix.
In October 2023, Production Weekly posted about the ‘Squid Game’ American remake, listing Fincher as a producer without mentioning a director. It seems like this project is indeed underway.
Recently, Netflix revealed the first look for ‘Squid Game’ season 2, scheduled to premiere in 2024.
‘Squid Game,’ with its nine-episode first season in 2021, became a massive hit for Netflix. The drama, centered around a life-threatening competition for ₩45.6 billion, earned 14 Emmy nominations and won six, including Best Drama Series. At the 2022 Screen Actors Guild Awards, it made history as the first non-English and Korean series to receive nominations for various categories, with Lee Jung-jae and Jung Ho-yeon winning. The series also took home three Golden Globe Awards, including Best TV Drama.
