Filming for Danny Boyle‘s 28 Years Later, starring Cillian Murphy and Jodie Comer, has recently wrapped. The Sony-developed film is currently scheduled for a June 2025 release date.
In an interview with IndieWire, Ralph Fiennes, who plays a good doctor in 28 Years Later, revealed the plot details. He said, “It’s three films, of which two have been shot. Britain is 28 years into this terrible plague of infected people who are violent, rabid humans, with a few pockets of uninfected communities.”
What is the Plot of 28 Years Later?
28 Years Later centers on a young boy who wants to find a doctor to help his dying mother. He leads her through the beautiful northern English terrain. However, lurking in the forests, hills, and woods are the infected. Eventually, he finds a doctor who may initially seem strange and odd but is actually a force for good.
Directed by Boyle from a screenplay he co-wrote with Alex Garland, it is a sequel to 28 Days Later (2002) and 28 Weeks Later (2007)—the third installment overall in the 28 Days Later film series. Taking place after the events of 28 Weeks Later, the Rage Virus has returned, and a group of survivors must navigate a world ravaged by hordes of infected zombies.
The cast of 28 Years Later includes Murphy as Jim, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Comer, Fiennes, Jack O’Connell, Erin Kellyman, and Edvin Ryding as E. Sundqvist.
During the filming in Northumberland, England, the first-look set images of Comer and Ryding were leaked. They were spotted on set filming a scene where Comer’s character is chased by terrifying zombies.
The film is produced by Boyle, Garland, Andrew Macdonald, Peter Rice, and Bernie Bellew. It is a production of Columbia Pictures, DNA Films, BFI, and Decibel Films.
28 Years Later will hit theaters on June 20, 2025, by Sony Pictures Releasing.
